ABSTRACT

Oxidation is a normal and necessary process that takes place in your body. Oxidative stress, on the other hand, occurs when there’s an imbalance between free radical activity and antioxidant activity. Excessive amounts of these free radicals can lead to cell damage and apoptosis, contributing to many diseases such as cancer, stroke, cardiovascular diseases. A lot of medicinal plants, traditionally used for thousands of years for their interesting antioxidant activities. Tinospora cordifolia commonly named as “Guduchi” have reported medicinal properties like anti-diabetic, anti-periodic, anti-spasmodic, anti-inflammatory, anti-arthritic, anti-allergic, anti-stress, anti-leprotic, anti-malarial, hepatoprotective, immunomodulatory and anti-neoplastic activities. This study deals with elucidating anti-oxidant potential of Tinospora cordifolia. The leaves of plants were collected and subjected to extraction by hydroalcoholic solvent. The percentage yield for pet ether & Hydroalcoholic extract was found to be 15.25 % and 19.19% respectively. Phytochemical test showed the presence of carbohydrates as primary plant metabolites and steroids, triterpenoids, tannins, phenolic compounds and flavonoids. The total phenol & flavonoid content was found to be 0.385 mg/100mg 0.624 mg/100mg. The IC 50 value for Tinosporia cordifolia was found to be 36.68 mol/L. The activities of SOD, CAT which was subsequently decreased by the administration of HETC in a dose dependent manner and most profound activity was shown by HETC at a dose of 300 mg /kg b.wt. At a dose of 300 mg/kg, b.wt. HETC increased the activity of SOD and CAT by 66 % and 46% respectively but decreased MDA content by 30%. From the results obtained it can be concluded that Tinospora cordifolia possess potent antioxidant activity.
