ABSTRACT
Free radicals which are generated by various metabolic reactions in body are the sole cause of tissue damage & severe inflammation. Plants are the source of both that is anti-oxidant & anti-inflammatory components. Due to side effects of marketed formulations the hunt for plants with these two properties is never ending. Thus, this study deals with examining the anti oxidant & anti-inflammatory potential of Muehlenbeckia platyclada. The plant material was collected and subjected to extraction followed by phytochemical screening and other quantitative tests. Results showed that the hydroalcoholic extract of Muehlenbeckia platyclada gives the percentage yield (11.63%). The phytochemical screening revealed that it is rich in alkaloids, flavonoids, carbohydrate, saponins, diterpenes, proteins and amino acids. Total flavonoid content was found to be 0.674mg/100 mg while alkaloid content estimated to be 0.429mg/100 mg. The extract of Muehlenbeckia platyclada have comparable antioxidant potential with that of ascorbic acid as IC50 for ascorbic acid is 31.52 µg/ml and for plant extract it is 77.14 µg/ml. The anti-inflammatory potential of extract was found to be 378.09 µg/ml while for standard diclofenac it was 260.56 µg/ml in terms of IC 50 value. Thus from results it can be interpreted that Muehlenbeckia platyclada possess potent anti- oxidant & anti- inflammatory activity.
